Revitalizing Culture – Tokaido, Arimatsu

Arimatsu Shibori, one of Aichi Prefecture’s most renowned traditional crafts, is now produced largely using synthetic dyes.
Recreating Arimatsu Shibori using authentic “indigo” ➡ Adding a story to the recreated product.
In Jippensha Ikku’s Tokaidochu Hizakurige, there is a scene in which the protagonists, Yaji and Kita, purchase an Arimatsu Shibori tenugui while stopping in Arimatsu during their journey. Based on historical research by an expert, we recreated the kind of tenugui that Yaji and Kita would likely have purchased.
